FOUNDATION LINES OF CUSTOM STOCKDOGS

KUYKENDALL'S PEPPER

Kenneth Kuykendall's father, Henry, began breeding Border Collies in the early 1960’s. All the dogs we raise still go back to his original foundation bitch, Pepper.  Pepper came to Henry because she was a dog that required work to be happy.  Pepper was bred to Fred (Roy) to combine the best of Arthur Allen and Carol Shaffner’s breeding.

FRED (ROY)

Fred (Roy)' is shown  with Henry winning his first trial ribbon. The 5 generation pedigree of Pepper and Roy includes such prominent ISDS dogs as JM Wilson’s Cap 3036, Glen 3940, Moss 5176, Whitehope Nap 8686, and Bill 9040 along with Kirk’s Nell 3514, WJ Hislop’s Sweep 3834, Thos. Wilson’s Dave 7900, Purdie’s Tam 3465 and Trim 2696, Millar’s Drift 4380 and Gilchrist Spot 3624.  These dogs are key foundation dogs in the ISDS registry and of the modern Border Collie today.

CHARLIE

The mating of Roy and Pepper produced Charlie.  A tough dog that Henry will tell you was one of the finest.  Charlie only lived to be 16 months old because of a broken footwhile jumping a gate.  He was taken to the veterinarian and never came out of anesthesia.  Fortunately Charlie had already sired a litter of puppies.  In this litter was Kuykendall's Jean.

KUYKENDALL'S JEAN

Jean would develop into a dog with tremendous heart, desire and power.  Henry competed with Jean at the Walnut Hall trial in Lexington, KY during the early 70’s. She and two other dogs were the only ones out of a field of 72 to pen the sheep that day.

KUYKENDALL'S CHUCK

From Jean came perhaps the most pre potent sire Henry ever owned, Chuck.  Chuck's sire was Jack Price’s Roy another very hard dog.  Chuck was sold as a pup but returned because he was too tough on stock and too tough to handle.

 KUYKENDALL'S KATIE

At this time Henry acquired a female from Jim Shearer he called "Katie".  Katie was used along with Chuck in the mountains of southwest Virginia on 40,000 acres of Stuart Land and Cattle Company. Henry worked his dogs on a herd of 1500 brood cows and a flock of 2000 brood ewes.

KUYKENDALL'S JOE

Chuck and Katie produced many wonderful dogs.  Kuykendall's Joe was from this cross and is the sire of our foundation females, Callie and Pepper.

 BILL CROWE'S SAGE

The dam of our foundation females was Kuykendall's Salt.  Her sire was Bill Crowe's Sage.  Kenneth chose Sage to breed to his female Kuykendall's Kary when he saw Sage at a trial in Virginia.  Kary was  the first red dog produced from his father's line.  Sage showed the working ability Kenneth required in an outcross for his female.

  KUYKENDALL'S SALT

Kenneth mated Kuykendall's Joe and Kuykendall's Salt several times producing the base for many of the Kuykendall dogs you know today.  Please select About us to learn more about Custom Stockdogs.
